Cindy Sheehan Joins Activists Planning Impeachment/Out of Iraq Protest at New Year's Rose Parade

Local and national impeachment activists will stage non-violent protests and demonstrations throughout the Rose Parade in Pasadena, California, on New Year's Day, with support from Cindy Sheehan and the Camp Casey Peace Institute. The convergence is called the White Rose Coalition, in honor of the resistance movement in Munich in 1942.  It includes members of the Los Angeles National Impeachment Center (LANIC), CODEPINK, World Can't Wait, ANSWER, Progressive Democrats of America, the Green Party, Veterans for Peace, United for Peace and Justice, and others. The groups are calling for impeaching George W. Bush and Dick Cheney for high crimes and misdemeanors, and to end  U.S. occupation of Iraq. "This administration has shredded Constitutional protections and is now apparently planning another illegal military strike, this time to bomb Iran," says Cynthia Mather, a spokesperson for LANIC. "The consequences of such an assault on global well-being and security would be catastrophic," she said. "Congress is obligated to act before it is too late.  But the Democrats are not making any move to stop it, so impeachment is our only recourse."

Numbers of protestors and demonstrators from the various groups could be in the hundreds or in the thousands, said Peter Thottam, Executive Director of LANIC. "We expect this to be a national day of impeachment visibility, with folks joining from all parts of the country. It is hard to gauge how many will show up, but according to the latest MSNBC poll, of 584,000 people asked if they thought Bush had committed impeachable offenses, 89 per cent said yes! There is a tremendous level of anger and frustration out there. I doubt if our Beltway politicians have any idea just how much."

---------- Forwarded message ----------
From: mE  (Eva Marian)

The initial idea forwarded by Peter Thottam of LANIC ( www.BCImpeach.com) was "Operation White Rose", an allusion to the German students who courageously leafletted the Germans/Europeans in 1942 to stop the fascism in Germany, but were ultimately arrested and killed.

Jennifer thought the word "Operation" might hint too strongly at violence/military terminology, and could hinder our efforts if intercepted by the wrong people.  She proposed the name "White Rose Coalition" as a more peaceful-sounding name and was supported.  As we're still in the planning stages, the name for the event is still open for discussion, but for now I'll use hers.

(Eva also threw in the idea of Peach-Colored Roses, as a cross between (Code) Pink & Orange (Alert), as well as the alliteration on the words IMPEACH and PEACE---would require graphic)

Items for Consideration

1)  The Rose Parade is probably the last and largest media opportunity of the year, with 1 Million+ crowd in attendance, and probably the most extensive media coverage of the year.

2)  We wish to stage a peaceful, coordinated, multi-prong series of Free-Speech Actions at the parade, without breaking any laws or TOR rules( i.e., not blocking anyone's view, cooperating with bag size rules, etc.), being as entertaining and media-friendly as possible, to attract maximum camera coverage/ camera time, and minimum offensiveness / censorship.

3) We wish to break through the "media blackout" with a clear, concise message of resistance, with as narrow a focus as possible, encompassing the fewest, highest priorities of the groups involved.  So far, Peter recommends we focus on these two concepts (not necessarily in this order):

   a) Impeachment/ House Res #333

   b) Stopping War(s)/ Peace

4) Possible methods of action  (ideas welcome):

   a)  Holding up letters spelling "IMPEACH"

   b)  Dropping banners

   c) Aerial advertising (if allowed), such as skywriting, banner-flying, hot-air balloons,
ultra-lights---Eva and Ed looking into pricing and possibility on these options.

   d) Wearing t-shirts that reinforce the message (i.e. WCW's "Impeach War
Criminals" t-shirts, ImpeachBush Sweatshirts, etc.), either with their own logo or
spelling the words out in timed line-ups.  Ricco mentioned the possibility of
double-sided t-shirts, spelling one word from the front and another in back.

    e) Holding up colored (or white) sheets that spell the words out, or using "body
spelling" for aerial viewing. Linda mentioned she knows the guy who organizes
these for aerial photographs and will contact him.

5) Inviting supporting groups to participate in the coalition process, with one or two
reps of each group  :  So far we've agreed as follows:

Eva --- World Cant Wait (WCW),
Jennifer -- AnswerLA,
Linda --Code Pink,
Ricco---Progressive Democrats (PDLA).
Other possibilities: Green Party?  Please advise.

Linda suggests we urge the National groups' involvement, given the size of the event,
inviting them to fly in to attend, posting info on their national websites, etc.

The Tournament of Roses Parade was established, and first held, on January 1, 1890, in Pasadena, California, eight miles (13 km) northeast of Downtown Los Angeles.

Rooted in tradition, this parade is broadcast on multiple television networks, watched by upwards of one million spectators on the parade route, and seen by millions more on television. Starting January 1, 1923, it is traditionally followed by the Tournament's other event, the Rose Bowl college football game.  As much as 50 to 80 million U.S. viewers are estimated to watch some portion of the parade on television.  Another 300 to 500 million are estimated to view it around the world.

In 2002 and 2006, when the Rose Bowl Game was also the BCS National Championship Game, the "Granddaddy of 'em all" was not held the same day as the parade; the 2006 game was played on January 4. Not all fans were pleased with the change; some thought the atmosphere and tradition of the Rose Bowl were lost. However, since the BCS title game is now separate from the host bowl, it will no longer affect the date of the Rose Bowl Game, even when the title game returns to Pasadena in 2010.

The parade is televised on ABC (as the official network of the tournament and the Rose Bowl game itself), but coverage is also available on NBC, Univision (in Spanish), HGTV, and KTLA (the latter two tout commercial-free coverage, although KTLA repeats the parade throughout the day with commercials). Until 2007, the parade was also broadcast on CBS.

IMPEACHMENT - PROCESS OVERVIEW

The right to impeach public officials is secured by the U.S. Constitution in Article I, Sections 2 and 3, which discuss the procedure, and in Article II, Section 4, which indicates the grounds for impeachment: "the President, Vice President, and all civil officers of the United States shall be removed from office on impeachment for, and conviction of, treason, bribery, or other high crimes and misdemeanors."

Removing an official from office requires two steps: (1) a formal accusation, or impeachment, by the House of Representatives, and (2) a trial and conviction by the Senate. Impeachment requires a majority vote of the House; conviction is more difficult, requiring a two-thirds vote by the Senate. The vice president presides over the Senate proceedings in the case of all officials except the president, whose trial is presided over by the chief justice of the Supreme Court. This is because the vice president can hardly be considered a disinterested party—if his or her boss is forced out of office he or she is next in line for the top job!

What Are "High Crimes and Misdemeanors?"

Bribery, perjury, and treason are among the least ambiguous reasons meriting impeachment, but the ocean of wrongdoing encompassed by the Constitution's stipulation of "high crimes and misdemeanors" is vast. Abuse of power and serious misconduct in office fit this category, but one act that is definitely not grounds for impeachment is partisan discord. Several impeachment cases have confused political animosity with genuine crimes. Since Congress, the vortex of partisanship, is responsible for indicting, trying, and convicting public officials, it is necessary for the legislative branch to temporarily cast aside its factional nature and adopt a judicial role.

Close to a Majority of US now favor Bush impeachment: poll

Fri Jul 6, 6:59 PM ET

"Nearly half of the US public wants President George W. Bush to face impeachment, and even more favor that fate for Vice President Dick Cheney, according to a poll out Friday.

The survey by the American Research Group found that 45 percent support the US House of Representatives beginning impeachment proceedings against Bush, with 46 percent opposed, and a 54-40 split in favor when it comes to Cheney.

The study by the private New Hampshire-based ARG canvassed 1,100 Americans by telephone July 3-5 and had an error margin of plus or minus three percentage points. The findings are available on ARG's Internet site."
