Achluophobia is the irrational fear of the dark. The person momentarily deprived of his sense of sight have been guided by his imagination. Thus, the slightest noise can be misinterpreted by the brain. Achluophobia is a phobia that is very common among children under 6 years old, but some adults still suffer from this phobia. It will be difficult or impossible for someone suffering from achluophobia to sleep in the dark.
Causes and treatments
Achluophobia can be due to a trauma. Thus, if you have been the victim of an aggression at night, you may unconsciously perceive the night or the darkness as a dangerous situation. Moreover, the night and the darkness has often been perceived as the world of ghosts, thieves, bandits, or simply the villains. It is possible to follow a behavioral and cognitive therapy in order to understand this fear and then be able to treat it healthily.
